Gerhard, Johann
(1582–1637)
   Theologian and Devotional Writer.
   Gerhard was born in Quedlingburg, Germany and was educated at the Universities of Wittenberg, Jena and Marburg. In 1616, after a period in the service of the Duke of Coburg, he became a professor at Jena. He is remembered both for his theological and for his devotional writings. His Confessio Catholica and Loci Theologici were regarded as standard statements of the Lutheran theological position, and his Meditationes was being reprinted as late as 1846.
